Biography

Dr. Fakhran is an Assistant Professor of Radiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Fakhran graduated with a BA in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia. He completed a medicine internship at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, Hawaii. He then completed a radiology residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. After residency, he completed a neuroradiology fellowship at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. Fakhran now specializes in advancing imaging of mild traumatic brain injury at the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program, the first and largest research and clinical program focused on the diagnosis, evaluation and management of sports-related mild traumatic brain injury in athletes of all levels. The UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program treats many elite and professional athletes from around the world who come to seek the comprehensive care that includes Dr. Fakhran’s advanced imaging analysis.  In addition to his extensive clinical experience, Dr. Fakhran has been a lead author on several major groundbreaking studies on advanced imaging in concussion published in Radiology, The American Journal of Roentgenology, Future Neurology, and Progress in Neurosurgery and an author on more than 20 peer-reviewed research articles for other prestigious medical journals. He has been a leader in the symptom-based approach to concussion imaging and management, championing an individualized approach to diagnosis and treatment based on a patient’s unique post-concussion symptoms.  He is a frequently invited presenter at national scientific meetings on imaging in brain trauma, and is often interviewed by local and national news media as an expert source.
